The Fighter's journey 7/8/2011

This is a another judo class post.  The main waza (technique) that we worked on was Harai-tsurikomi-ashi.
This was a really fun leg technique.  If you truly get your his in on the entrance and move your upper body out of the way, it is effortless and uke (receiver of the the throw) goes flying. I was a little worried about my ribs, but it did not bother me much at all.  I especially was worried about newaza (mat work) but it did not even bother me then.  The randori (sparring) went well I even got a few throws off and I took my ukemi on several throws.  So over all a great training evening.

Fighter's Journey Jun 3rd. 5 HOURS of Training

Today I met Kru Dan at Punch Kick Grapple.  We worked in their ring for 3 hours.  We started off with basic footwork drills using angling using all four angles.  Then added in round kicks and teeps to the footwork.  Then he had me deal with a fighters coming in with a barrage of punches.  Next we went on to 3 rounds of pad work, really working on my power and proper distancing for both my punches and kicks.  We then went to 3 rounds of light sparring.  He made me really push the pace since my fight will only be 2 minutes rounds.  He also demonstraded to me when I was dropping my lead by either punching or kicking me in the head.  by round three I was exausted.  He then had me perform 100 push-ups, 100 crunches and 50 squats.  I though great finally done, but no.... He thne had me do 2 rounds of shadow boxing.  This was a tough workout but It was really, really useful and think it will help me out for my fight.

My arms were dead I was sweating a pig and there was only  2-hours to Judo.

I decided to watch the kids class at Osugi Sensei's dojo.  I always enjoy watching a good teacher at work.  I usually pick up at least a cool drill or 2.  Watching him I definitely did.  Fifteen minutes before the adult Judo class I decided I better strech out more than usual.  Class then started and we went right into warm-ups.  I realized that I might have bitten off more than I can chew, when after the first 2 sets of jumping jacks and lunges, I was alreay sweating like crazy.  I made it through the warm-up and then we went on to moving uchi komi (Movement, set-up the throw off balance but do not complete the throw).  We worked on leg sweeps both from pushing on the arm grabbing your sleave and then the one grabbing the lapel.  The next uchi komi was for hari goshi, sweeping hip throw.  Both techniques were a lot of fun and I several points in my movement and distancing that I need to work on.  The kids class ended so we could use the whole mat. So we started doing newaza (ground work) and we did about 5 rounds.  We then proceeded to do free uchi komi, where you practice what ever waza (technique) you want.  This showed how tired I still was.  A few of the lower ranks I did get mount or kami sho gatame, bu could not get off a submission.  When rolling with the higher ranks I was not able to escape anything.  A high light for the night, was i was bucking a brown belt off of me and during that he set up a cross choke so I ended up in his guard and choked at the same time.   I did one round of randori and twisted my ankle and though oh no this was a bad idea.  it was a slight twist with no swelling.  I decided to sit out the rest of the randori.
This was a great endurance test training like that but, I don't think I will do it again.

Fighter's Journey May 28 Judo Workshop

Osugi Sense came in Again and worked on some moving uchikomi with us.  Today  we worked on tai otoshi (body drop).  He reviewed with us that in Judo there are 2 step throws and 3 step throws and we went over the 2 step throw footwork.  Since Tai Otoshi is a three step throw we went over this more.  The moving uchi komi was a lot of fun.  We ended the day with randori (Sparring).

Fighter's Journey May 27th 3.5 hours With Ajarn Nelson

Jai Noah and I met at L.A. Budo around 9 Am to carpool to Elite MMA to Meet Ajarn Nelson to work on our ring craft and clean up our techniques.  It only took 30 minutes even with some missteps on the freeway.  so we waited for Ajarn in the car.  He arrived promptly at 11 AM and told us we could have waited in the gym.
We were originally going to train for 2 hours but we were there for 3.5 hours.  He really is a giving instructor.  We started with using the ring to help us stretch and warm-up.  We then went right to work on workin on our teeps specifically being able to pinpoint where we wanted to teep.  We utilized the ring and turnbuckle to help us with this.  We next worked on Escapes from the corner against hands, feet and round kicks.  We spent a good deal of time on this, which we ALL needed.  We then worked on escaping both in the center of the ring and on the ropes if someone catches your round kick.
We then worked counter clinching techniques that we could use instead of fighting for the plum (Thai clinch).  this was AWESOME!!! It was so effective set so simple.  It will take some practice to use though.  He also said he was not happy with the state of fighting exchanges he sees in the ring for Muay Thai.  Was like you are saying "Hi Honey, I am home.  She replies, "Yes dear."  It is too much I attach you defend, now switch.  He said good Muay Thai combos should annoy and overwhelm your opponent's defenses, then you go in for the kill. combos should be fives and sixes not twos and threes.

He said that for Muay Thai you first need to learn defense, attacking is easy.  That is why we spent almost 2 hours on defense.  We then proceeded to practice our 3 kinds of teeps on the heavy bag.  Doing several rounds of it.  We then stretched out a little and then did several round of teep skip step Round kick on both sides.

We finished with stretching and Ajarn Nelson telling us about the philosophy of Muay Thai.  You must turn hard things soft and soft things hard.  A fighter must always treat not only his fellow fighters in his camp with respect but also his opponent.  if you cannot find any opponents you could not fight and you would be out of work.  So he said that Muay Thai is much more than kicking and punching it is about becoming a better person.  He said many successful fighters go on to become successful business men, doctors layers, because of what they learned in the ring.  We then went to lunch (more like Linner; lunch + dinner)

We had an engaging 2-hour conversation about a host of topics including religion, specifically Buddhism, his time in the Thai Military, how Thai's love their king and bout Isan. The Isan* (Isan/Thai: อีสาน [ʔiːsǎːn]; also written as Isaan, Isarn, Issan, or Esarn;[1]) is the northeast region of Thailand. It is located on the Khorat Plateau, bordered by the Mekong River (along the border with Laos) to the north and east, by Cambodia to the southeast and the Prachinburi mountains south of Nakhon Ratchasima. To the west it is separated from Northern and Central Thailand by the Phetchabun mountain range.  The people of the region are also called isan and are of Lao decent.  He said that the Isan are the ones in Thailand that do most of the menial jobs, and also serve in the military.  Most importantly most Nak Muay (Muay Thai fighters) are Isan.

After finishing our food we carpooled back to the dojo.  We learned so much today that information was leaking out our ears.

Fighter's Journey May 25 2011

Since the audio is not that Great. Noah, Vincent and I just finished up 12 rounds or sparring.  Noah is also fighting on June 11th.  Enjoy some of the rounds.

Fighter's journey May 26

tonight could be called sparring with the Big Boys.  We had Paul who is like 6'6" but feels like he is 10 ft tall. Dannie almost went pro (knee injury) in football.  He is big strong and fast as anything.  some of what I learned today was to deal with someone coming in with lightning fast punches, that also rocked you.  I started to keep my opponent off me more with teeps which helped stopping him form closing the gap on me.  Dealing with Paul was interesting.  If I went back using either triangle footwork pattern 1 or 2  he could still reach me and often did with his Jab.  So had to play a bit with my footwork to make it so I could attack!! So got beat up a little today.  Good lessons and lots of stuff to work on.

Fighter's Journey May 22nd

1 Got to the dojo about 10:30 to get ready for our special training session.  Again only Jai made the effort to attend.  I am glad that she did.  Instead of running three miles like was planned we ran seven.  Since we ran so much, we decided to do only sparring rounds and skip the bag work for today.  I am really starting to use footwork pattern 1 and tried to incorporated some of the others in sparring today.  I was really successful in using footwork 3 and landed a good low kick to the back of Jai’s leg on the way out.  I really need to work on my shielding but, it is so hard since my shin still really hurts.  I have been doing, at least today, what I preach which is ICE, ICE , ICE!!
Still VERY tender though.

Fighter's Journey May 20th

To act as a role model for those working toward their Shodan and nidan belt ranks.  I decided to add pushups, sit-up and the Muay Thai 15 count to my daily practice.

I went to Judo again tonight.  We learned in addition to Osoto Gari, Osto Otoshi and Osoto Garuma.  It was especially fun to do the Osto Otoshi.  Wea slso worked nage komi which is where I throw you, you throw me, back and forth to work the throw in a compliant manner to work on the mechanics.  We then did a few rounds of Newaza and straight into Randori.  I got off a tomoe nage again but not much else.  I was given some great pointers including loosen up, which is really hard when you are trying to throw, but I am working on it.  At the end of class Osugi Sensei scolded the class for doing throws without lifting, he did not want any tani otoshi type of throws.  He reminded the class that randori (sparring) was not competitive in the sense that you resist throws that you are caught in.  if your partner catches you in a throw take the ukemi (break fall) and then get up and try to throw him next.  He said that Judo is not defensive it is an offensive sport, even when you perform a counter it is an attack using your opponents energy and movement.  Several students were promoted from white belt to green belt including a new friend of mine Javier.   I was exhausted again and smiling again, I really love Judo.

Fighter's Journey May 19th

Today when the alarm rang I DID hit snooze once, but got up after and did my morning five miles.  Because I was a little banged up today I felt like I was an Edsel, but as things got going as the first 5 blocks became 10 then 15, It started to get easier, and i felt like a Civic then a Lexus.  I had my normal morning yogurt with my coffee and later had a lunch of Trader Joes' Spicy California rolls.  Snack of a slim Jim, yeah I know.  Dinner Tonight was a turkey and Colby on 7 grain bread again.  At least I finished it today.  Yesterday was bad with the Ben and Jerry's but I was still under caloric debt to cut up.  but for fuel that was bad, and I think that contributed to me having trouble getting up this morning.  Tonight after regular classes Jai and I sparred for 6 sounds.  I tried out shielding with my shin.  Hmmm not jet still hurts like crazy.  Must ice tonight.  My teep (Push kick) is getting much better and getting more combos in.  So I feel I keep getting better.  Off to bed and tomorrow another 5 miles...

Fighter's Journey May 16-18th

So have not been able to run because of My leg but, I have kept up my Muay Thai practice and sparring.  Jai, Noah and I have been training hard.  Did normal Muay Thai class with Kru Dan.  From this week Noah and I are sparring at 50% power instead of normal light sparring. We did an extra 5 rounds after my taijutsu class on Monday and on Tuesday we did 3 rounds of drills mostly teep and footwork  drills. Then between the 3 of us did 11 rounds of sparring so about 7 rounds each. last night I taught the regular Muay Thai which Noah was in.  Worked gliding block, scoops, shielding and teep and teep ka drills.  We went about 15 minutes over with about 7 rounds.  A few of the students stayed for a few for rounds. many or the regular Muay Thai students stepped up to do 50% power as well.

Putting on the White Belt Again

This will be the 4th time I have gone back to being a white belt.  In 1985 I started training in Budo Taijutsu then called Ninjutsu or Ninpo Taijutsu, in 2002 BJJ in 2005 Muay Thai and now May 2011 Judo. Which will be chronically me training at the Sawtelle Judo Club under Kenji Osugi.

Since we have been having Kenji Osugi teach our instructors Judo once a month to help us get better at our throws and that I found out that one of the nights that his dojo is open is on Friday, I asked Osugi Sensei If I could join his classes in West Los Angeles.  He said that would be fine.  I was definitely honored that he would allow me to attend his school, but I did not realize just how honored.  On Friday May 13 I went to the Japanese community center that houses the Sawtelle Judo Club.  I was greeted by a very nice woman that asked if she could help me to which I told her that I was there too train.  To which she told me that they were not taking in any new adult students. Then Osugi Sensei waved me in. so i paid my dues, insurance and went to change.    I was received very warmly and everyone helped me out very much.  The 2-hour class started out with conditioning like most 'alive' training schools.  We then did uchi komi drills, which are when you practice the entrance (tsukuri), The kuzushi (balance breaking), and the kake (the perfect time to excecute a throw), but do not throw.  I was surprised at how fast uchi komi was and also how much of a work out it was.  We then did some uke-tori drills consisting of uke attacking with a throw and tori practicing defending.  Then did about 15-20minutes of newaza (ground work -wrestling).  The rest of the class was randori, sparring.  on a Friday night there were 12 adults there, which i was told was a small night.  Besides me there was 1 other white belt, a green belt and the rest were brown and black belts.  I was tossed with leg sweeps, hiza garuma, uchimata, a few drop knee Seio nage, and a tomoe nage.  I did get off a tomoe nage myself but on the other white belt.  It was a great time.  As stated above I have trained in several  alive arts but this is the first time that the next day not only was I sore but really exhausted, but in a good way.  Can't wait to go back next week.

5/11 to 5/15 Fighter’s journey

Training Log,  May 9 - May 15

Monday
I was really in the zone and before I knew it I had run a mile past my half way point.  So instead of doing 5 miles I did 7.  It shows you that sometimes things come easy.
Tuesday:
Morning run was HARD today!! I keep looking at every mile marker after the half way point, I kept saying, "slow down but DON'T STOP".  I make it.
Evening: 5 Rounds of Thai Pad work and 6 rounds of sparring

Wednesday
Monthly work shop with Ajarn Nelson
He really wanted to help Noah, Jai and me get ready for our fight on June 11th.  So we worked on a lot of defense!  We really worked  footwork footwork and more footwork.  We then worked on improving our teeps (push kicks) and we learned 3 types of Teep Ka, which are teeps  where the toes are turned either outward or inward to kick the thigh or side of the ribs.  We learned so much information especially with combining the footwork with gliding blocks and scooping blocks.
Thursday Noah Jai and I did 3 rounds of heavy bag work and 6 rounds of sparring.
Saturday Day off
Sunday:
I was all ready and geared up for a group run in Manhattan Beach.  I am glad that Jai showed up; otherwise it would have been just me.  We ran for 45 minute then headed back to the dojo and did 5 rounds of heavy bag work alternating between the boxing bag and the Thai bag.  We then worked on our defense drills for 3 rounds.  We finished with 5 rounds of sparring.  The only problem is that near the end of round 4 I caught a knee to the side of me leg, the part the shinguards don’t cover.  I hope I can run tomorrow…
Sparring Notes. I notices that every time I came in for hands only comb like jab-cross-hook-cross I would stop straight in front of her and she would nail me with a right round kick to the gut.  Much fix that.
